National Sports Week is held every four years.  PON became a means of increasing national sports achievement and evaluation of development results conducted by the Indonesian National Sports Committee of the province along with other sports stakeholders in the region.  PON is expected to be captured through the seeds of potential athletes who can be developed and improved to achieve higher performance.

The first PON was held in Solo in 1948 and was intended as a means to unite the nation through sports activities.  This main goal is still relevant today.

On the 1st April 1962 a regional postal union was established with Manila as its headquarters, the first Postmaster General of the Philippines was Mr Palomar.  In 2002 the headquarters was relocated to Bangkok.

Spilocuscus rufoniger (black spotted cuscus) is one of Indonesia’s largest cuscus and lives in the dense tropical forest spread over the northern part of the island of Papua.  Poaching and habitat destruction is a major threat to these indigenous animals.

Kandelia candel is one of the rare species of mangrove and is found only on the east coast of Sumatra and Kalimantan near the equator.
